This course will concentrate on the methods and skills to effectively provide therapeutic recreation activities for older adults in a variety of settings; current issues and problems involved in providing leisure and recreation services for elders; examination of the value of recreational activities in the lives of elders with regard to relatives and friends as well as oneself.

This course focuses on an examination of major social services designed to meet the needs and concerns of older adults. A systems approach is used to identify legislation, programs, policy, models of service delivery funding, conditions, and barriers to service delivery. The course will examine resources serving the older adult. Students will learn a variety of specialized knowledge practice concepts, skills, models, and theories to facilitate their practice in gerontology.

541 Health In The Later Years

Exploration of changing health status and needs in later life. Discussion of body system changes, bio-psycho-social influences on older adults health, health enhancement stratgies, common health problems, treatment, prevention, drug use, sexuality, chronic illness, health care delivery systems, long term care services and supports.

543 Social Gerontology

This course will help you gain an awareness of the bio- psychosocial issues and impacts on individuals as they age. It will also help with the understanding of the impacts of the aging population on service delivery and community resources. While giving knowledge of the factors which contribute to general health, health management, and health services and delivery to older adults.
